The Vienna Porcelain factory, the second oldest after Meissen, accomplished the finest quality in painting on porcelain. In Vienna, Josef Leithner made numerous pigment discoveries, laying the groundwork for elaborate and sophisticated painting techniques on porcelain. This Biedermeier gilt cup and saucer is a fine example of 1824, the orange ground is decorated with gilt rose foliage, the white cartouche carries the description ‘Don d’amitie’ (gift of friendship).
